Advent and Christmas

SEASON OF ADVENT
(from the ORDO)
Advent has a twofold nature: It prepares us for Christmas, when we recall Christ's first coming among us, and it is also a time when we look forward to his second coming at the end of the ages. Advent is a season of joyful expectation.

During Advent, each Sunday's Gospel reading has a specific focus. The Old Testament readings, especially those taken from Isaiah, are prophecies about the Messiah and messianic times. The selections from the writings of the Apostles present exhortations and instructions on different themes of this season.

The following activities and/or parish events are scheduled in the parish this Advent:

First Sunday of Advent
  • November 30 at 5:30 PM Mass, blessing of Advent wreath and lighting of the first candle.
  • Lighting of the first candle of Advent wreath at 9:00 AM Mass and 11:00 AM Mass.
Second Sunday of Advent
  • Pancake breakfast hosted by the Knights of Columbus after the 9:00 AM Mass and 11:00 AM Mass
  • Advent Talk, Evening Prayer, Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, Confessions, Wednesday, December 11, starting at 5:30 PM
  • Sacred Heart School Christmas Concert, Thursday, December 12, starting at 6:00 PM

Journey through Advent 2024
The Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops has announced the online weekly video series for this year’s Advent season, which will present reflections on the Gospel readings for each Sunday leading up to Christmas.

This year’s English spiritual reflections are delivered by the Most Reverend Frank Leo, Metropolitan Archbishop of Toronto.

The video series can be found on the CCCB website. You may also click this link: JOURNEY THROUGH ADVENT 2024.

PRAYER ON THE FIRST WEEK OF ADVENT
(Families may pray this prayer before the Advent wreath)
God of hope and love,
we praise you for sending Jesus, your Son,
to save us from our sins
and to be the light in our darkness.
Bless us as we gather in his name,
and bless this wreath as a sign of your unending love
and of Jesus' presence among us.
Keep us watchful in prayer
as we await his return in glory.

We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord,
who lives with you and the Holy Spirit,
in eternal glory,
God, for ever and ever.
Amen.

PRAYER ON THE OTHER SUNDAYS AND WEEKDAYS OF ADVENT

(Families may pray this prayer before the Advent wreath)
God of light and hope,
look upon us in love,
and fill us with the Spirit of Jesus
that we may love you and serve you in your kingdom.
Protect us during this week
and keep us watchful in prayer
as we await the coming of our Lord, Jesus Christ,
who is the light of the world,
and who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
God, for ever and ever.
Amen.
