This will become part of the observance our parish feast day (Month of June as month of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus) and of the month of June as Filipino Heritage Month in Canada. This special event is sponsored by the Cathedral Migrant Ministry and the Organizing Committee from the Filipino-Canadian Community in Prince George. It will be held on June 22, 2025, at Sacred Heart Cathedral and school grounds.
Santacruzan is a popular Filipino Catholic tradition that originated as a way to commemorate and to re-tell the story of how Queen Helena, or “Reyna Elena,” mother of Constantine the Great, uncovered the Holy Cross on which Jesus Christ was crucified. Traditionally, it is held at the end of the month of May through a colorful pageant/parade of Queens (procession and singing of Ave Maria).
The celebration should also remind present followers of Jesus, of how he was crucified for our salvation. It’s a show of faith and hope for the salvation of the Cross offers. According to Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle, “It is not a fashion show. It invites us to reflect on the Cross, and how through it, Jesus Christ made our salvation possible.”
Everyone is welcome to join and celebrate our parish feast day. Let's gather for a potluck dinner on this same evening. Please see below and bring food to share good at least for 10 people.
A-E: main dish
F-I: rice or noodles
K-N: fruits or vegetable salad
O-S: dessert
